Daphine Postl

Daphine is a ceramic artist from Rochester, NY; whose love for carving and sculpting powerful imagery into her ceramics has led her to create pieces that feel universal, yet intimate. She creates with hopes of sparking a dialogue, since each person will project a unique story onto the same piece, and that through the discussion of these individual perspectives, it will bring audiences together with empathy and perspective. This safe space can guide us to find community, connection and to finally feel seen.

Daphine is currently a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project. CMAEP is on 80-acres of property on Cobb mountain in northern California. The residency combines ceramic-focused practice with forest and land management. This includes controlled burnings to prevent wildfires, collecting and chopping wood for wood firings and sustainable living practices.

Daphi primarily soda and reduction gas fires to achieve the surfaces on her work. Since coming to Cobb, she has started to learn and participate more with wood-firing. Daphi mainly uses porcelain and cobalt in her work, but is starting to experiment more with other materials like the rare earth oxide, Erbium Oxide.

Daphine is a proud Child of Deaf Adults (CODA). Her first language is American Sign Language, and both ceramics and ASL are languages communicated with the body and soul. In both languages, you must tune into what is within your hands. In language, there is a delicate balance of pulling from the inner self and presenting it; and visually is her preferred method.
